9/10/11/12th June 2010

So Jim comes back after five years in Dubai and says “I’ve got my mates 60th birthday coming up, he wants a cabaret night for all his friends, do you fancy doing the production management?”

6 weeks prep follows and then ….

Wednesday the 9th June I get the train to London and go straight to the hotel. Jim had booked me in to The Flemings in Mayfair. A beautiful hotel but the downside is the menu prices start at £15.50 for a burger! That’s never gonna happen, so I found myself wandering the streets looking for sustenance. Eventually settled for Burger King - £5.99 – perfect. Bed at 11pm.

Thursday 10th,  Up at 6am – it’s my birthday, but that will have to wait now. Take delivery of the staging, lights and trusses and stash it all around the Great Room at The Grosvenor House Hotel. We will start the build tomorrow at 2am.

Bed at 7pm - set the alarm for midnight. Tossed and turned for three hours, stressing about what I might have forgotten for tomorrow, and then gave up and had supper – room service burger – fifteen pounds fifty! I left the hotel at 1.30am and walked round to The Grosvenor House.

Friday 11th, Sixty men and women built three stages, put up six trusses, lights and sound and lined the whole room with star-cloth by 12 noon. The sizes of the three stages have reduced the room capacity from 1200 to 500 guests. I’ve now been awake for 30 hours.

At 1pm we set the main stage for the 61 piece orchestra and at 2pm they started their sound check. At 3pm Katherine Jenkins sound checked and at 4.30pm Lionel Richie’s trio sound checked without Mr Richie. We broke for dinner at 6pm and tidied up for an 8pm start.

8pm Bobby Davro followed by Jethro and Jean Pierre Blanchard (google Jean Pierre – he’s amazing).

10pm The orchestra followed by Jim Davidson, Kev Orkian, Lionel Richie and Katherine Jenkins – all brilliant.

12 midnight – end of cabaret and then two hours of dancing. The dancing finishes at 2am. I have not slept for 44 hours.

Saturday 12th, The crew food is delivered but we are not told – so, by the time we discovered it, the chips are cold and the sandwiches stale. I had a shout at room service but just got a lot of Armenian abuse in return. Ah well, not long ‘til breakfast.

There is a truck curfew at the hotel, so we can’t put equipment outside until 7am. By 6.30am everything was down on the Great Room floor and packed away. This was great news because I had ordered breakfast to be delivered at 7am – sixty Bacon and Egg rolls. At 6.45am we all sloped off to the crew room. A quarter past seven – still no food. I made the long walk to hotel reception and they called room service. Room service told the receptionist that the food had been delivered. I asked “where to?” room service said “the band room”. By the time we found the food, it was cold. There are many things to admire at this million star hotel. But overnight catering is not one of them.

We finished loading trucks at 11.45am. I was on the train by 12.25pm and was asleep by 12.30pm. The first zeds for fifty-four and a half hours. Dream about my 3 day late birthday party - can't imagine Katherine and Lionel turning up to that. Note to self – “must get a proper job”

Catshill  Friday 21st May - hoping to see brother Fred.

It looks as if the "Berries" Greenlands Social Club gig on the 4th April is sold out. Loads of old mates coming.

"Berries" at Ladywood Social Club - Nice Club, nice people but boy was I sick! Brilliant gig for the band - nerve racking for me not knowing when the next puke was coming. The whole family had the dreaded "Winter Vomiting Bug". The kids got it first. Naturally, they both shrugged it off in about ten minutes. Dianne and me on the other hand ..........

13th March 2010 - "Berries" at Ladywood Social.

6th March 2010 - Playing bass for Steve Laister at Riviera Centre Torquay.

27th Feb 2010 - Met my best school mate today for the first time in 40 years! Mac and Sheila Turner dropped in for a chat at Stoke Prior Country Club. Maurice Preece was also there - hadn't seen Maurice for even longer. Maurice was the bass player in my first band.

28th January 2010 - Stage managing "Voice In A Million" concert at 02 Arena. 5000 children in various choirs.

10th November 2009 - Joined "The Rockin' Berries"
